How to measure your jeans size and why really it’s important to know.
16-10-2019 in Other

So you need to buy a new pair of jeans. BLECH.
There's that fear that begins to swell in the back of the throat as you imagine the countless hours of searching, the multiple stores, the unbuttoning, the pulling, the buttoning, the squishing and the hopping.

Not to mention, the once in a while "can't get one damn leg past your thigh" experience. Oh, Just me? Pfft!

Well okay, you probably haven't had the same shopping experiences as I've had...

and maybe you've never felt the "chuck-it into the fuck-it bucket" jean hunt dramas...

but I believe I can speak on behalf of many people that "finding the right pair of jeans" can send anyone back home to their sweatpants, leggings, or, even more cringy, those  "small-medium-large" jeans that stretch.  Of course, you can go for the SM/M/L/XL/XXL jeans, but if you want to do well in the acting and modeling world, you will need to know this and MAKE SURE IT IS IN YOUR PROFILE!

You have no idea how many people are getting surpassed on jobs because your look alike has all their information correctly in their profile and you don't.  The extra time it takes to call and get you to find the right size could be a deal-breaker on a big production!

Yet don't fret my little chickadees, we at INC are going to inform you how to properly measure yourself, so you can all fill it into your personal INC profiles...ahem..and maybe even find a refreshed excitement to that good ol witch hunt.

Preparation:

If you already know what suits your body type best then skip to the measuring part. If not, its best to research what types of styles look good on what body type you have.

1. Identify Your Body's Best Rise & Cut

The rise in jeans refers to how far up your waist the jeans will sit.

Mid-Rise Jeans usually sits beneath the navel and is the most common.

Low-Rise Jeans normally sit 2 or 3 inches below your belly button or if you want that 90's look.. then drop it even lower.

High-Rise Jeans (my favorite) and trendy as it is flattering to a curvier figure and sits at or slightly above the belly button.

As for the cut, we are talking about the legs.  There are several types of jeans cuts for women and each contains different features.

Normal (relaxed)- Casual, versatile and can be worn with almost everything. Can be worn by most body types, are a little boxy and roomy, but still structured and fitted.

Straight (straight leg)- Classic look and it is appropriate in most casual settings.  They usually sit on your "natural waist" and are at equal thickness from the ankle to the knee.

Slim- Fitted, but not that tight like the skinny jeans. Slim style jeans go well on most body types and pair great with ankle boots and sneaks.

Skinny- Skinny jeans are the snug, legging-like style of jeans that feature a very tight cut. Not everyone can pull off skinny jeans as they look best on a pair of very thin legs.  Some say they are generally not associated with serious people, so if you want to wear a pair of jeans that run on the tighter side but still show of your legs and appear strong and grounded, might be good to try a straight-cut jean or a slim jean just to be safe.

Bootcut- Originally named for their great fit over boots. Great for cold and rainy weather as they fit over short or even high boots. Boot cuts are similar to flare jeans but not as exaggerated.

Flare- More exaggerated boot cut and less than bells.  They are regular jeans that are cut slightly and tapered larger beneath the knee to accommodate the wearing of boots

Bell- Just No unless you are at a 70s revival party.

2. Wear shoes that you will usually wear with your jeans

It is important to think about what kind of shoes you are wearing with your jeans after you have decided on your style and cut. Makes no sense to measure barefoot or you might end up with flares at your ankles which can work in specific ensembles but not all the time. So if you are looking for a good pair of everyday comfort jeans, then throw on your fabulous sneaks and measure where you want them to drop.

3. Stand with your back against the wall

Stand up as naturally straight as possible so you can get precise measurements.

Measuring yourself for your Jeans Size: WAIST/INSEAM (inches)

1. Find a fashion tape measure or a soft bendable one.

This is always one of the hardest steps. If you cannot find one, ask your neighbor, or buy one at your local sewing or home stores. You want to make sure you can wrap it around your waist. You can use a string and then measure it with one of those hardware measuring tapes but can still make mistakes this way. Best to invest in an actual fashion measuring tape if you are serious about your actin career.

2. Ask a friend to help

Having a friend help you will ensure that you have the best and most accurate measurements. Of course, you can do it yourself but it can change the length of your legs as you bend over to stretch, look, and mark.  If you already have a nice fitting pair of pants then you can get your measurements from them by lying them flat on a table. Check this amazing article and video if you are doing it yourself with a great fitting pair of baby blues.

3. Measure Your Waistline in INCHES

Pull the tape measure around your waist and mark the number. By knowing your waistline size will allow you to buy jeans from any brand, no matter what sizing system they use.

8. Measure your inseam in INCHES

After deciding which kind of style, cut, shoes and how far you want your pants to drop on your ankle or foot, you need to measure the length of your inseam.
